Individual Performance Coaching

A newly appointed manager needed to quickly gain the ability to make executive decisions in order to successfully establish a quality improvement department as a result of the merger of two American merchant banks. The Human Resources Director decided to use SyCon - The Sporting Bodymind Group to provide a support programme of personal coaching to enable the manager's technical expertise to be matched by a newly acquired ability to contribute to executive level meetings and policy development.

A SyCon - The Sporting Bodymind Group consultant met with the manager for a series of six, one hour sessions spread over a three month period, supplemented by telephone coaching between meetings. The strategy was to help the manager develop greater appreciation of his personal power and status, encourage a positive attitude to risk taking, and develop flexible team management skills. Using a process based on identifying personal goals and establishing key personal qualities, the consultant coached the manager as he tackled specific areas and relationships where he would demonstrate changes. For example, the manager knew that qualities such as confidence and clarity were necessary yet he believed he lacked these in these in executive level meetings and as a result contributed little. By exploring other areas of the manager's life where he did express these qualities, the consultant was able to help the manager make a more substantial and effective contribution in meetings.

Outcomes:
The outcomes of the coaching were assessed by the manager himself, by his peers and his superiors. The view of all three was that the successful launch of major new quality initiative within an aggressive time schedule and completion of an audit by the Federal Reserve were due in no small part to a manager who was now able to communicate effectively with his own team. Management situations that in the past had been difficult, notably a direct reporting relationship to a senior executive, were now being addressed with conviction and confidence.
