John Syer and Christopher Connolly form Sporting Bodymind (Britain's first sports psychology consultancy), to translate academic research and humanistic (counselling) psychology into applied 'mental training' for athletes. They stress the inter-relationship of mind, emotion and physical performance.

 
   
1980 Start of a five-year period of work at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club under the management of Keith Burkinshaw and Peter Shreeves. During this time Spurs win the FA Cup twice, the UEFA Cup and never finish lower than 4th in League.
1981

Individual sessions for Barbara Lynch, British Olympic Trap Shooter, addressed shooters' prime mental skill - concentration. Barbara becomes first UK woman trap shooter to win the European Championships.

Golfer, Tony Jacklin, reports that our mental training sessions helped him to regain his 'cocoon of concentration' and extend his professional career.

"Sporting Body, Sporting Mind", by John Syer and Christopher Connolly (Cambridge University Press). First British book on applied sports psychology. Adopted as a basic text for sports science degrees in the UK and the DDR. Translated into 8 different languages. 'This book shows that modern sport psychology is not the sole province of scientists and computers' Peter Ackroyd, The Times.

Scandinavian Airline Services, our first business client, invites us to help develop their long-haul flight crews into cohesive teams. The programme includes early interactive video techniques.

First year of work with the British Cycling team and Chris Boardman (then 17 years old) and the team pursuit team. John Syer travels to all major events for the next 12 years.

Spurs beats Liverpool at Anfield, for the first time since the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.

Bank of America, our second business contract, asks us to design and conduct team building programme.

First elite athlete and coach education courses for Scottish Professional Golf Association, University of Wisconsin, USA, Netherlands Olympic Committee, Professional Lawn Tennis Coaches Association, Welsh Badminton Union and Richmond Rugby Football Club.

"Team Spirit" by John Syer (Heinemann) introduces a Gestalt approach to team development. For the sports coach, it also draws on examples from business and the theatre.

"The Fitness Jungle" by Christopher Connolly and Hetty Einzig (Century Hutchinson). This book provides the first comp-rehensive examination of the range of opportunities for physical development from martial arts to dance to sport.

Pre-season work with the Chicago Cubs in Phoenix, Arizona.

Head of Training and Development at Ford Europe, invites us to help integrate team develop-ment 'people skills' with technical and engineering training. This initiates a radical change in their approach to teaching technical skills.

First season with Glamorgan County Cricket Club team. Players include Alan Butcher, Mathew Maynard and Hugh Morris. Glamorgan climbs from the bottom of the league table

Further developed the concept of pairs sessions, begun at Spurs and later used extensively in executive business teams.

"Business Matters" (BBC) showed how our large-scale interventions for Culture Change and Total Team Development within a large corporate division had parallels with our work with the British cycling team pursuit team.

"Team Building: a Team Leaders Guide" by Christopher Connolly and John Syer distils ten years work into a manual to support Ford's fast track management programme.

BP Oil invites us to work with all the major product teams at the Sunbury Research Facility. We help strengthen shared identity and purpose in teams with famously independ-ent membership.

We provide one of three British sports psychologists at the Auckland Commonwealth Games

First season at Watford Football Club with Manager Steve Perryman.

We collaborate in the development of Ford Motor Company's Engineering Quality Improvement Programme: a three year training and integrated skills practice programme incorporating all major technical and people skills. Acclaimed as a major innovative approach to engineering development.

Pre-Olympic training camp for the British Olympic Association, first athlete and coach education programmes for the French Golf Federation.

At the Barcelona Olympics, Chris Boardman wins individual pursuit cycling Gold Medal and the team pursuit team rise from 15th to 4th.

Validated research carried out on our work at Nottingham University shows marked improvement in overall performance across a range of measures.

Team mental training sessions for Netherlands Men's Volleyball team which subsequently wins Olympic Gold.

Start of five year association with Essex County Cricket Club. Coach Keith Fletcher, players include Paul Pritchard (capt.), Nasser Hussain and Ronnie Irani.

Jaguar Motor Cars call us in to help build robust matrix Vehicle Programme Teams responsible for vehicle design, over the next eight years.

   
1994

Bill Belichick, Head Coach of The Cleveland Browns, USA NFL team, brings us over to work at all levels of the organisation - the Club Management Team, the coaching staff and the players. The Browns get through to the playoffs for the first time in years.

Dow Corning invites us to develop and help deploy an integrated team development and change management planning programme.

We work with the Executive Management team at Sweden's Telia Telerespons to support shared vision and values during their transition from the public to private sector. Telia at the fore-front of multinational alliances in Europe.

   
1995

For Balfour Beatty/Amec, we design and deliver Project Partnership Training for cross-functional and cross-Company work groups in the difficult Jubilee Line joint venture. They work more effectively and implement significant process improvements. Jubilee Line still opens late!

Our innovative EQUIP (quality) programme is the first Ford of Europe programme to be transferred to world headquarters in the USA and is deployed to 20,000 engineers world-wide.

   
1996

Our team development programmes are used by the Metropolitan Police Technology Department to enhance culture change and team performance. We continue to support the regeneration of their teams over the next five years.

"How Teamwork Works" by John Syer and Christopher Connolly (Simon & Schuster). The most ambitious book yet. Details systems, feedback and development cycle approach to team development.

At the Atlanta Olympics again with the British Team.

We begin work with the Jaguar's X200 vehicle team, leading to the launch of Jaguar's third vehicle line, the new S type saloon in 1998. Jaguar's production output doubles overnight.

   
1997

Team development work over two years with the multinational (Denmark, UK, France, Italy, Austria and Sweden) alliance management team at COMET (Copenhagen Metro Company). Key players are Tarmac (GB) and Ansaldo (Italy).

We work with Daimler-Benz on 'Team building with multiculturally diverse and geographically dispersed team members.'

We give support in the USA and UK for GlaxoWellcome's first 360 degree feedback and coaching process for their Senior Executives.

Work with DART, (a MoD contract to refit the Devonport Shipyards), marks the start of our work with the civil engineering alliance of Brown & Root, Rolls Royce, Weir Group, and Babtie. We work with all major project teams, the Alliance Board and Executive Team over the next four years.

At The Environment Agency, we develop and deliver a behaviour based training based on their competency framework.

It is deployed throughout the Environment Agency.

Major research project completed on the implementation of Transformational Leadership in 20 financial institutions, identifying the interventions which spearhead cultural change.

We design and run the first on-going accredited humanistic sports psychology programme, focusing on a Gestalt Approach to team development

Design of a team launch programme for the Early Development Candidate Teams at Pfizer in which cohesive, matrix project teams are built from diverse disciplines to 'fast-track' high potential compounds.

We pioneer Transform-ational Leadership in the UK with the Executive Leadership team at Brown & Root Energy Services.

Pre and post-evaluation shows entire management team makes a significant increase in transformational behaviours. Training is cascaded through senior management.

We help to kick off the Jaguar X400 team as it drives to further reduce vehicle development time to 3 years and launch a 4th model line.

   
1999

We develop and deliver a behavioural leadership skills programme for Pfizer. The programme includes a 360 degree instrument for feedback and coaching to support development.

We are invited by The Royal College of Music to take part in a 3 year Leverhulme Trust research project. The programme will demonstrate that mental training enhances the performance of elite musicians.

The Environment Agency's technical and information systems supplier, CIS, ask us to develop and deliver a Transformational Leader-ship programme. The successful programme is supported by an in-depth training programme of internal coaches.

A controlled research study within Barclays Bank's Service Provision Division integrated Transformational Leader-ship training, 360 feedback, coaching and best practice sessions. The outcome, independently measured by Birkbeck College, shows significant increase in transformational behav-iours and a significant positive impact on the corporate climate.

We support the BP e-Business team launch. This spearheads their work in pioneering the use of e-technology applications in the oil industry, whilst refining our work with e-business and e-teams.

At Jaguar Cars we support regular planning and strategy meetings with Senior Product Development Teams, over two years. Profitable growth continues.

Alan Butcher moves back to Surrey County Cricket Club and invites us to conduct team and individual sessions. Surrey win the County Championship.

At Jonkoping State Hospital, Sweden, we start an on-going team development and leadership programme for the Heads of Department.

Barclays Bank uses our EQi self report meas-ure to assess Emotional Intelligence and enhance coaching.

We help build the Customer Service Leadership team at BT Cellnet as they compete in the hotly contested market for customer satisfaction and loyalty.

We deliver Transformational Leadership training and coaching at American Express.

We create a Transformational Leadership development programme for Friends Provident, using our 360 instrument to deliver feedback and coaching.

The Netherlands Men's Field Hockey team hires John Syer for an intensive two week mental training programme on penalty strokes. The team goes on to win the Gold Medal at the Sydney Olympics, winning both the semi-final and final on penalty strokes.

Skanska invite us to work with their project management team in Cairo on the Mubarak Media City Project - the largest public contract in Egypt in the last ten years. We focus on customer/ client relationships.

Manager Glenn Hoddle appoints John Syer 'teambuilding expert' to Southampton Football Club for the 2000/2001 season. Southampton rise to their highest point in the Premiership since 1992 by reaching 8th position and ending the season in 10th position.

 

 

 

   
2001

Sporting Bodymind re-launches as SyCon - The Sporting Bodymind Group to reflect our development over 20 years. Whilst our experience of elite sport continues to enhance business performance in organisations world-wide, our experience of business now informs and distinguishes our work with elite sport.

John Syer rejoins Glenn Hoddle, now at Tottenham Hotspur FC.

We start a combined Transformational Leadership and team development program for key executives at Yorkhill NHS Trust.

We design and deliver a management development programme for public sector staff within the London Boroughs of Lambeth and Hackney. This introduces a performance management system for all service heads that includes goal setting, feedback reviews, appraisal and evaluation. The system is linked directly to the broader Local Authority Development plans to ensure commonality of intent.

Christopher Connolly joins Gordon Strachan’s staff at Southampton Football Club.

We lead a cultural change process with O2 - before, during and subsequent to its de-merger from BT. This focuses on transformational leadership and teamwork and includes a high performance leadership team process for the O2 Board.

We design and deliver a 'Building Balance' module, as part of the Stores Leadership programme for Tesco. This is delivered to over 800 in-store leaders UK-wide.

We lead a lead a team development programme for Sport England’s Active Sports team and Transformational Leadership, Personal Productivity and Project Teamwork programmes for TRW Technical and Conekt.

Mark Mercer starts work with Hampshire County Cricket Club.

We are invited to design and deliver a pilot Leadership Development programme for Surrey Police.

Southampton Football Club reach the FA Cup Final.

Undertook a Business-focussed transformational leadership programme for BT Retail. Using the BT Values and F&BM Leadership Capabilities as a framework and providing a behaviourally anchored, business-focused context, SyCon integrated three approaches to maximise the learning and growth of this team to support personal, team and leadership development.

   
     
>2004 Contracted to support AMEC in delivering BRITSATS, the Design, Fabrication and Installation of a satellite Bridge Linked Platform to the Britannia Platform, over the 3 ½ year life of the project. Essential elements include maintaining and strengthening the contractor/client relationship between AMEC and ConocoPhillips (and Chevron/Texaco) and building the internal strength of the AMEC Programme leadership team and provide ongoing support for all the teams in the overall project

Worked with the Technical Services Team at O2, using the innovative concept of 'self-directed learning' to engage managers within the organisation in a series of learning and development focus groups. This initiative had three objectives (i) to cascade key messages from the new strategy to key managers throughout the organisation (ii) to engage people in reviewing the new strategy / competency framework and focus on what this meant for them in terms of behaviours and skills gap and the learning initiatives required to close the gap, and (iii) to build in managers the sense of ownership in future training / development initiatives

Followed Maurits Hendriks to work with the Spanish National Men’s Hockey team for Olympic qualification. Following their success and qualification for the Olympics continued to work with the Spanish National Team during their preparation for Athens.
