Team Spirit - The Elusive Experience

John Syer

Everyone has had some experience of working with others within a group context, be it as a member of a family, a football team, a board of directors, a choir or a theatrical company.

Team Spirit is an attempt to understand and explain the team experience. It is a guide for the potential group member, suggesting that you may be throwing the baby away with the bath water if you avoid teams at all costs. It is also a yardstick for you to reassess your own approach to leadership.

Team Spirit draws on sports examples - the most readily available group experience - to illuminate such areas as conflict, motivation, confidence and stress. The author encourages a healthy streak of non-conformity, particularly in reaction to the tub-thumping, 'rah-rah' brigade that mimics the form without evoking the essence of team spirit. He applauds teams with leaders who challenge unthinking conformity, who develop relationships and communications between group members, who guide members towards self-motivation rather than 'motivate'. These are the groups who find they have strength and ability greater than the sum of their individual strengths and abilities.
