Team Working in Finance
and Legal Departments
A major internal change programme within a multi-national oil company
had highlighted the need for senior staff in the finance and legal
departments, based in London, Brussels and the United States, to
improve their ability to work together if they were to match the
company's new direction. It was essential that key financial and
legal services be maintained in the face of corporate restructuring
and change.
SyCon - The Sporting Bodymind Group developed a two day, workshop-based
programme to develop trust, communication and team-working. Before
each workshop, individual team members were interviewed to fine
tune the focus of the programme so that each team's specific issues
could be addressed. The content of the workshops, which took place
off-site, included training in key inter-personal skills such as
giving feedback and conducting meetings. There were also carefully
structured exercises designed to increase contact and communication
between team members. Rather than using 'outward bound' activities
or artificial case studies, SyCon - The Sporting Bodymind Group's
programme enabled the participants to focus on their actual relationships
and real-life problems.
Outcomes:
Internal change continued apace within the company and the people
who had been through the programme reported an enhanced ability
to rely on the support of other team members to 'weather the storm'.
They were able to maintain existing high levels of work output despite
uncertainty outside their teams and 30% reductions in staff numbers.
They reported improved working relationships as a direct result
of their experience at the workshops. One participant said "they
were two of the most important days of my life". The improved
relationships and a greater sense of team spirit that had been developed
enabled the departments to meet the increasing needs of their internal
clients throughout a period of organisational change.
